Former CIA Creates App to Warn People from Terrorist Threats

Former CIA Officer Joshua Katz has created 'TerrorView' app which now has become available on iOS App store and Google Play.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta - Following the wave of attacks hitting capital city of France, Beirut and a belligerently perpetrated downing of Russian airliner along with other cases which received fewer attention in the past few weeks, authorities from all across the globe went to immediately formulate strategies to prevent their countries from giving terrorism another access to produce escalating number of casualties.

The traditional responses have been the ones shown generally in the media such as the pursue and military attacks against the terrorist groups, attempts of reconciliatory dialogues with the opposition, barriers to their financial and military sources, and many other similarly practical form of responses.

The United States however, is one step ahead in better equipping its population with the proper instrument to anticipate and safeguard themselves from the threat of terrorism.

A smartphone app called ‘TerrorView’ created by Joshua Katz, former CIA covert intelligence officer, senior advisor to chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and U.S Army Ranger, is designed to give Americans the access to ‘insider knowledge on potential threats’.

It has been informed by the company that creates such app that the public will be yielded access to information that used to be classified and only for the eyes of senior government officials. It has also been informed that such decision to open the door to information wide open to sensitive materials was made without compromising to national security and so all of its information have been granted exposure to the general population.

“Whether you're a business traveler or a parent who wants to know about disease outbreaks or terrorist threats near your child's school, this app provides trustworthy and potentially life-saving information to people who don't have the time or the know-how to find it themselves, TerrorView can literally make the difference between life and death," Katz explained, in a press release as cited in Foxnews.

The app automatically monitors the surrounding of the mobile phone owner so that it alarms the person as to potential threat around the area. The system used has been exclusively combined with experts data from intelligence unit of more than 100,000 sources. The company describes the process as “scanning information and chatter found in thousands of public places.”

Think like a terrorist

It is important in the current global setting, for authorities to acknowledge the growing significance of technology, internet, social media and mobile apps as these play key instrumental roles in many peoples lives. People may not watch television as much as they do or even if they do, it would not be as often as going online.

The notoriously known extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) or as many prefer to call as ISIS has been making good use of these instrument to glorify its group through postings of propaganda and attractive writing pieces and videos to get more candidates to be recruited. This suggests the fact that one method of counter- attacking its rampant widespread is to do exactly the same as they did, that is to dominate the virtual world and create a specialized app to give people prior knowledge from potential danger.

According to Vocativ, the terrorist group has created an app called ‘Fajer Al Bashaer (Dawn of Good Omens) which informs about its successes in Syria. The developer of the app said that it aims to “assist the victory of the Islamic State by conveying its messages to Muslims everywhere”. The aforementioned app however, has been removed as the authority immediately responded to it.

Even when one is erased, it does not stop the group from creating another one with a much more interesting name. Its presence has also been identified in social media platform such as Twitter, Youtube, Instagram and Facebook with its followers reportedly reaching thousands.

Case of Indonesia

The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information had previously blocked and banned 22 'radical' sites in early April. The Indonesian Journalist Alliance (AJI) appreciated the Minister’s clever gesture as the growing concern regarding the websites heightens with most of them portraying radical teachings.

A group of experts were gathered in accordance to the Ministry of Communication and Information law number 290 year of 2015 regarding forum addressing issue such as websites with negative content.

AJI views government's transparency as necessary as to yield nationwide citizens information on the authority's progress and willingness to uphold the law and prevent its people from being virtually victimized from the teachings of the radical websites.

AJI however, does not want for the gathered experts to be another justification to make another institution which censors many things in the virtual world.
