French Man Off the List, 9 Inmates Will Face Execution Soon

The second batch in the death row will face execution soon excluding Sergei whose legal process claimed to be incomplete.

Liputan6.com, Jakarta The Indonesian government has previously announced the decision to perform execution process for the second batch currently queued in the death row at Nusakambangan Correctional Institutions after the 60th Asia- Africa Conference Commemoration ended.

Now that the event has passed, the execution is unquestionably imminent.

The Indonesian involving authority has not yet issued an official statement confirming the decided schedule for execution, however it is no longer a speculation that such execution is just around the corner.

Recent appalling report suggests that the inmate originating from France, Sergei Areski Atlaoui, has been excluded from the second session death penalty list following his continuous pledge to the National Court in Jakarta (PTUN).

Such sudden affable gesture of PTUN towards Sergei surely provoked nationwide criticism with many eagerly questioning the reason behind the last- minute decision.

Despite the growing popular outcry and disbelief among pro- death penalty citizens, the Indonesian Attorney General confidently denied any speculations suggesting his susceptibility to the pressures given by France government.

"No, it is not the pressures from the French President. That is not the reason for Sergei's exclusion," Indonesian Attorney General, Tony Spontana, Jakarta, Monday (27/4/2015).

Tony explained the reason behind the cancellation of Serge's execution focuses much on the incomplete legal norms that is deemed necessary for the legitimizing of execution.

Tony further explained how the defendant has fervently pledged for clemency to the PTUN. With the circumstance given, the Indonesian Judiciary is then obliged to take into account and respect the requests pledged by Sergei and wait until all legal process are done accordingly so that they the could determine the fate of the French man.

"He went for a last minute battle against the court pledging for clemency last week on Thursday 23 April 2015 at approximately 16.00 pm local time," Tony informed.

Tony however, is convinced that PTUN will reject clemency requested by Sergei eventually.

This is a similar gesture previously shown by the infamous Bali Nine duo from Australia. Such effort is largely viewed as an attempt to postpone execution.

Many people then are now wondering when the execution of Sergei will be.

Tony informed how Sergei will not be included in the third session of execution following the second one nor the session where the notoriously known drug kingpin Freddy Budiman is listed in.

"As soon as the verdict confirming the rejection of Sergei’s clemency request officially announced, we will have him executed separately," he added.

With Sergei off the list, there are now 9 inmates lined up for execution.

Their names are as follow:

1. Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso (Philippines), captured for smuggling 2,6 kg heroin.
